Edward Mutesa's shortcomings were legion, on all fronts....personality, administrative, family etc etc.
Some
time in the early 1960s, I chanced to see a letter written by some
severely disgruntled insiders in the Mmengo establishment. The letter
dated back to the time of that 1953 crisis or shortly before. Those
gentlemen who wrote it had very bitter words for their Kabaka,
criticising him on matters to do with his persoanlity, general
propriety, lack of frugality, uncaring attitude towards his subjects,
vindictiveness, etc.
Some people in Mmengo
were in fact determined to have him thrown off the throne, but
ironically what saved the day for Edward Mutesa was his deportation!
Andrew Cohen liberated Mutesa!! Believe it
or not. He gave him a boost in popularity at a time when things were
not good at all in Bulange/Mmengo.
See below extracts of the letter....excerpted for source protection/protection of the authors descendants:
First excerpt, he was an overspender and non-caring for his subjects:
Second excerpt, no wonder that he was very mean even towards his own Nabagereka.....
Third excerpt, he was
reportedly very vindictive....
Fourth, he had no regard for his ministers, some of whom wrote this very letter.....
Fifth, he was loose-mannered especially with ladies.....
This
is just a sample of some of the problems that made many including that
MP of Surrey question whether he was fit to lead the people of
Buganda....
Do not ask for more........
