Cyber security, Innovation and the Internet Economy

Commerce already has had a major role in building trust on the Internet through the work of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA). These agencies are collaborating on implementation of the recently released National Strategy for Trusted Identities in Cyberspace (NSTIC), a strategy for enabling users to adopt identity solutions for access to various online services - solutions that are secure, privacy-enhancing, and easy-to-use.

Today’s cybersecurity threats include indiscriminate and broad-based attacks designed to exploit the interconnectedness of the Internet. Increasingly, they also involve targeted attacks, the purpose of which is to steal, manipulate, destroy or deny access to sensitive data, or to disrupt computing systems. These threats are exacerbated by the interconnected and interdependent architecture of today’s computing environment.
